HC: Tenants can't stand in way if owner wants to redevelop bldg

The Bombay high court has set aside repair permissions granted by the Mumbai civic chief to tenants of a Worli building. The court held that the tenants cannot obstruct the owner's wish to redevelop the structure. The owner has the right to undertake redevelopment, and the tenants' remedy is limited to having the building repaired or rebuilt. The owner challenged a recommendation for repairs without evacuating tenants, arguing for redevelopment that would provide them permanent ownership premises. The court clarified that it was not directing redevelopment in any specific form.

An unemployed man in Mumbai has been sentenced to life imprisonment for setting his wife on fire in 2017. The man suspected his wife's character and was unhappy with her for working outside the home. The court relied on the wife's dying declaration, dismissing the defense witness, their son, as possibly being influenced. The judge stated that the crime did not warrant the death penalty and that the evidence pointed to the act being homicidal rather than a suicide. The wife's dying declaration was considered credible and consistent with other evidence.

Eye on the big picture, corpn misses micro-level AQI spikes

The air quality in Mumbai has been consistently poor for nearly two weeks, with no countermeasures taken by the civic administration. Unlike Delhi, Mumbai does not have a formal mechanism to combat pollution. The municipal commissioner stated that Mumbai does not need a Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) like Delhi at the moment. Experts argue that a micro-level approach, similar to weather alerts, would be more effective in informing citizens about precautions during high pollution levels. The BMC has implemented some initiatives, such as installing jet sprayers and deploying marshals near dumping grounds, but more action is needed.
