Nitin Kareer, the additional chief secretary (finance), has been appointed as the new Maharashtra chief secretary, replacing Manoj Saunik. Kareer, an IAS officer of the 1988 batch, will have a three-month tenure as he is due for retirement on March 31. There is a possibility of an extension for him due to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sujata Saunik, who missed out on becoming the state's first woman CS, has a chance after Kareer's retirement.
