
Two months ago, Maharashtra's Mangrove Conservation Cell--the only agency of its kind in India dedicated to the protection of coastal ecosystems--filed a petition in Bombay High Court for the uprooting of mangroves on new mudflats created in the Thane creek by siltation. The reason cited was a growing threat to the feeding grounds of flamingos, the flamboyant, pink migratory birds that flock to the wetlands off Mumbai.
